Resources for Fiction Writers

Hello! I'd like to let you all know about start_writing, a resource community for fiction writers.

The community was originally created for the students of The Open University's 'Start Writing Fiction' Course (A174), however, membership is now open to anyone, although you don't have to be a member to post your resources and recommendations.

To find resources please visit the tags page. Each resource is listed under its most appropriate tags. The general writing sites tag leads to sites that contain information on many aspects of writing. You might want to look in detail at these sites to find additional information.

Feel free to share any links you might have stashed away in your bookmarks. The more the merrier!

We also have a sister site, start_writing_2, for challenges, prompts and critique.

Thank you for your time. :)

Shadow Talk
We arrange the subtle
art of withdrawing-
Falling up or falling
not at all-
Reminding the shadows
to keep us solitary
To make us even
with the weight
of the world.
We invent time
to watch our steps
and pace our breath
towards what is left,
and trust our death
will bring us rest
eternal release
from this mortal disease.

Do you know what these proverbs mean?
I am writing my thesis on American proverbs, and all of them contain body parts like hand, head, etc.
Unfortunately, I have absolutely no idea what some of the proverbs mean or in which situation they can be used (English is my second language). To be precise, I do understand the literal meaning of each proverb, but not the idiomatic one, and in which context you would use it.
I would really appreciate if some of you (the more, the better:) could help my out here. All your opinions count!
Here they are:

1. The back of one is the face of another.

2. To carry care into your bed is to sleep with a pack on your back.

3. If you must srtike a man from behind, slap him on the back.

4. It's a poor back that can't press its own shirt.

5. Ladies in slacks should not turn their backs.

6. Nothing goes over the devil's back that doesn't come back under the devil's belly.

THANK YOU!

hollywood.
it seems as if
true affection refuses to show itself
they come in & come out
oh, how they love to use me
but at night while a stranger lays in my bed asleep
i lay hugging myself

so with this lust we added the ingredient of drugs
it started with alcohol
you'd be surprised how much I can pour down my tiny throat
& I know he said he loved me
before he took my panties off

then came coke
the combination of razor blades
& white substances was hard to resist
plus i hear it makes you skinny
maybe somebody would love me then
if i fit the hollywood mold

i bought some blonde hairdye
and some make-up
maybe when i hide my face
i'll be good enough to be loved
& won't have to hug my knees at night.

Writing about Shopping
I'll show you my favorite shopping lairs and secret caches if you'll show me yours. Share your best finds and reveal your unique treasure troves, won't you? Along the way we'll meet some of the designers, shopkeepers, and local folk who bring us the sweetest deals, present the most unique pieces, and set the stage for our divine shopping experiences in the Bay area and beyond.

Here, now, the answers to the age-old question asked of us trendsetters all the time.

Where'd ya get that?

Writers Circle in North Bay seeking a few members
[crossposted to 2-3 other groups]

Hello everyone,

I am a member of a small Santa Rosa (California - just north of San Francisco) based SF&F and Horror (Speculative Fiction all inclusive) writers group that meets twice a month in a private home. We are looking for two new members, primarily writers who feel they are well on their way toward their publishing goals. We are a critique group and there is a reasonable amount of reading/critiquing required. We want to keep our group small and we are looking for dedicated writers to join us. Please contact me via my email address (in my user info) if you are strongly interested.

Thank You!

tell me the truth... if you don't like it be honest with me... if you think it's the stupidest poem you've ever read just tell me cause i want to get a good grade on it... don't worry about hurting my feelings or me hating you cause i'll never knoe who you are okae... just give it to me... and if you like it then tell me...:) thanx

For Grandpa...
I looked down at his face as the pain began to rise...
For no man that ever lived had touched so many lives.
Screams of grief fill my ears as I look to those around...
tears burst through my eyes as I crumble to the ground.
I can feel my heart beating but I feel so lost inside...
it fills me with growing pains that I never said goodbye.
A smile creeps upon my face as I brush away my tears..
for I never new a man so kind and wise beyond his years.
One last time I touch his face and I say a little grace...
and now i know the meaning of 'nothing gold can stay'.

Hello. I just joined this community.

My name is Cory. I'm 19 years old. I live in a shallow hellhole known as Binghamton, NY. I'm probably going to go through this Catholic Charities housing program for about a year, and then I plan on getting the fuck out of here.

I want to go to San Francisco and become a freelance writer. Which is why I joined this community, to meet people, so when I finally do get out of this hellhole... I know some people, and such.

Good to be here :)

advice
Hello.
My name is Jazmin, I am going to be moving upto the Bay Area to transfer into Berkeley this fall. I wanted to (a) establish contact, (b) throw a question out there: How hard is it to get a room (nothing fancy, just inhabitable) if I move up there end of July?
Hey, thanks a lot in advance to anyone who answers. By the way, my major is writing and journalism.

Networking for Imaginative Arts
I have just started a new community designed to facilitate networking among writers, artists, musicians, etc. who are interested in collaborating on projects--or the marketing of projects--in the imaginative arts (science fiction, fantasy, horror, surreal, etc.), especially in the Bay Area. Drop by wuttif and check it out. If it's your cup of tea, please consider joining. And please help get the word out. Thanks!
